Obituary:
How do you sum up a life well-lived in a few paragraphs? In the case of Daniel Michael Lucero you start with two words: family man. Dan was born into his first family on December 17, 1956, to parents George Lucero and Claire Almon. He was soon joined by three siblings: David (Jodie), Diane (Steve), and Douglas. Dan grew up in the Phoenix area and made some life-long friends there who became brothers to him and were with him until the end.
After Dan earned a BA in education from Arizona State University (ASU; 1978), he worked first as a teacher and later in retail customer service. It was in Arizona that he met his wife, Beth Bigelow Lucero, and they combined families in 1988. Together they raised two daughters: Sarah (Damon) and Amanda. It
was in this family that Dan proved himself to be ahead of the times; he worked proudly as a stay-at- home father and earned the best job title: Dad.
Of course, even dads need hobbies, and Dan had several: You could always count on him to be cheering for his Sun Devils, whether in person, when the opportunity arose, or from the sofa. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the teams and the players, and his nieces and nephews knew that an ASU-
branded gift was always a safe bet at the holidays. Dan could also be found rooting for the Phoenix Suns, the Kansas City Chiefs, and of course the teams that became his home teams: the Saint Louis Cardinals and the Saint Louis Blues. On the participatory side, Dan was an avid golfer and enjoyed hitting the links with friends and family.
Outside sports, Dan was a lover of music. Over his life, he attended hundreds of concerts, often combining these trips with opportunities to visit friends and family around the country. He was thrilled when the girls became old enough to join him on these adventures, and together they saw many
favorite bands.
Life doesn’t always give you pro-golf tours to attend or Gin Blossoms concerts to revel in though. Dan thrice fought cancer, beating it back twice. On his third round with this horrible disease, Dan put up a hell of a fight, inspiring all around him. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the battle on November 3, 2022, passing peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife, daughters, son-in-law, and the two treasured little boys who promoted him to Pa—Emerson and Grayson. He is also survived by his siblings; his siblings-in-law, Becca (Ian) and Mark (Charlene); cherished nieces and nephews; as well as his aunt and uncle and cousins.
In his many adventures with family and friends, Dan always brought a smile and a kind word. He would offer encouragement even as he was embattled himself. He lived that way to the very end and would be pleased to continue the effort to knock out cancer. Because of this, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you consider a donation to the NFL’s Crucial Catch, which promotes early detection and risk reduction in the fight against cancer:
